WHAT: Explore One of The Most Magnificent Places In Colorado That Few People Know About, Right Outside Of Rocky Mountain National Park Without The Crowds, In A Multi-Day Backpacking Trip. Then Rest Day At Mountain Lodge. Finish With 2-Day Summit Adventure To The Top Of Clark Peak, Tallest Mountain In the Medicine Bow Mountains! (Full Week Trip From Sat. Aug. 11th to Sunday Aug. 20th)

BEGINNERS: WE WELCOME BOTH FIRST TIME AND EXPERIENCED BACKPACKERS ALIKE. BEGINNERS WILL BE EDUCATED IN BACKPACKING BUT YOU MUST BE IN FIT CONDITION. I WILL TAKE YOU STEP BY STEP THROUGH THE PROCESS OF DETERMINING EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE TRIP IN ORDER TO BE BOTH SAFE AND COMFORTABLE. WE HAVE EXTRA GEAR INCL TENTS, WATER FILTERS, SLEEPING PADS, ETC AT NO EXTRA COST. WHEN: Saturday, August 11th 8:00AM - Sunday August 19th 5:00PM

DIFFICULTY: Moderate-Strenuous. For experienced backpackers the mileage per day is moderate at 6-10 miles per day. The summit day is a non-technical hike with some scrambling up rocks.

ITINERARY:

SAT. 8/11 (For those starting in Iowa) Meet at REI in West Des Moines. Consolidate into a couple vehicles and carpool to Ft. Collins, CO. Camp at campground in the beautiful foothills of the Rockies.

SUN. 8/12 Get used to the altitude by day hiking from a scenic canyon. Then drive to a chill campsite next to a babbling brook. Perfect place for a campfire and Star Trek Uno!

MON. 8/13 Short drive to the trailhead where we'll begin an epic 3-day backpacking trip into a little traveled area full of scenic views, herds of elk, and plenty of solitude.

TUE. 8/14 Continue backpacking trip. Summit high pass with one of the greatest views ever, visit an old abandoned cabin! Camp in an area home to herds of Elk.

WED. 8/15 Continue backpacking trip. Summit another high pass with awesome views, continue through high country for awhile before descending back down and to our vehicles. Drive mountain lodge where we'll have a great hot meal and beds to sleep on!

THUR. 8/16 Take it easy in the morning at the lodge, located next to the river. Tour the area by vehicle and do an easy day hike. Stay at Lodge.

FRI. 8/17 Drive to the trailhead and begin backpacking up a long valley towards our ultimate destination, Clark Peak. Camp at a high alpine lake.

SAT. 8/18 Wake up early to summit the peak! This is a non-technical route and only requires some scrambling. Mostly walk up. From here we'll be able to see Wyoming, Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as look back and see where we were on our first backpacking route! Hike back down to the lake, pack up camp, and hike back to our cars. Drive to Ft. Collins and beyond and stay at a campground.

SUN. 8/19 Drive back to Des Moines.

COST - If driving with us from Iowa: $550 which includes cost of transportation (gas), accommodations (2 nights lodge & campgrounds), guide service,  tents(if you don't have); group cooking gear; group first-aid kit, group water filter; campsite and backcountry permit fees. Full support pre-trip for gear, food, other questions/concerns. You bring your own food.

COST - If meeting us In Ft. Collins: $450 which includes cost of accommodations, (2 nights lodge & campgrounds), guide service, tents(if you don't have); group cooking gear; group first-aid kit, group water filter; campsite and backcountry permit fees. Full support pre-trip for gear, food, other questions/concerns. You bring your own food.

DEPOSIT: Must receive $200 deposit to hold a spot on this trip. Remainder due 30 days before trip departure date. 

REFUNDS: Must cancel more than 30 Days before trip departure to receive refund.

GEAR LIST & FOOD: I will provide list after you register. Don't let not having an item of gear deter you from the trip. I have extra gear.  We'll be eating food from coolers, etc. that we bring along the way, in addition to several meals at restaurants. 

LODGE:  We will be staying 2 nights in a mountain lodge with an attached restaurant located in a beautiful canyon next to a river. We have a 2-bedroom lodge that accomodates up to 6 people and has a kitchen and common area. 2 queen beds. 1 Full size bed. Couch.  People will need to double up on the queen beds or take a couch if they would like a bed.  I will take the floor. :)
